Description

NVERTED’s debut album marks a strong entry into the Swedish death metal scene of the 1990s. Recorded and mixed at Midgaard Studio from January to March 1995 and released in 1996 on the long-defunct Shiver Records, Belgium, the album delivers the raw energy and dark atmosphere of the era while incorporating moments of melody and intricate songcraft.

From the opening track, Diabolical Ceremonies, INVERTED establishes a relentless pace with driving blast beats and commanding vocals. The guitars are sharp and trebly, carving out an icy tone that perfectly complements the album’s ominous mood and cover artwork. Tracks like Condemned highlight INVERTED’s ability to combine crushing mid-paced riffs with melodic passages, creating dynamic tension that holds the listener’s attention throughout. Journey into Shadowland stands out with layered guitar harmonies, varied tempos, and memorable transitions between fast, brutal sections and atmospheric interludes. Each song is thoughtfully structured, with riffs and melodies that linger long after the music ends.

The original 1996 Shiver Records audio retains the rawness and authenticity characteristic of early Swedish death metal. The inclusion of the bonus track Across the Lake of Flames adds further value, rounding out a release that remains as intense and captivating as when it first appeared.

The packaging complements the music with evocative artwork and a well-laid-out booklet, presenting a cohesive visual and sonic experience. The Shadowland is a must-have for fans of early Swedish death metal, offering a potent mix of brutality, melody, and atmosphere that has endured for decades.
