Since their formation in the dying days of the year 2013, Phrenelith have established themselves as a menacing force on the contemporary death metal scene. Dwelling in the dark pits of Copenhagen, the band honed their deadly craft, releasing a wealth of well-received demos, splits, and EPs. These primitive outbursts led to the release of their debut album, Desolate Endscape, in 2017, which has earned them much renown and praise, further solidifying their place in underground death metal. Furthermore, that debut album took them to far-flung corners of the world, allowing them to tour extensively in Europe and North America, and make festival appearances at Maryland DeathFest and Asakusa DeathFest in Japan among others.

Several years having passed since the conception of their monumental debut album, Phrenelith have been slowly conjuring up new material, which has culminated in the creation and recording of a new full-length that will soon be unleashed upon the world. Titled Chimaera, Phrenelith’s second album comprises seven songs of bludgeoning death metal, with lyrics heavily inspired by the darker terms of Greek mythology and shows a horrid-yet-familiar visage. While delving into new and uncharted musical territory, incorporating new refining elements, Phrenelith’s attack is accompanied by the downtuned darkness and death-rattling emissions that the band is known for. Truly, it is not hyperbole to suggest that Chimaera eclipses the expansive horror of Desolate Endscape.

Fully befitting this accomplishment, Chimaera is completed with cover artwork by the late/great Timo Ketola, while mixing & mastering were handled by Greg Wilkinson, who’s worked with Autopsy, Vastum, Necrot, Ossuarium, Undergang, and Fetid among many others (recording took place in Denmark’s Studio Ballade). As another cursed year draws to a close, Phrenelith looms ominously over all!

Copenhagen’s PHRENELITH emerge from the darkness once again with their third and most unholy full-length offering, ASHEN WOMB. Seven sinister funeral marches, draped in bleak & blackened atmosphere: a lens into the forthcoming end of times.
A droning tone fades in, opening up a slow dirge which eases us into the apocalyptic explosion of death that will follow for the next 40 minutes.
Where guitars anxiously scale the fretboard & weave morose melodies while drums pound and smash with the force of the Chicxulub impactor.
Interspersed between the infernal, seismic, blackened stampedes are droning psychedelia & ambient noise interludes, immersing us further into the ever growing darkness. But there are also moments of overwhelming beauty, like on tracks “NEBULAE” and the eponymous “ASHEN WOMB”, where Phrenelith indulge in the repetition of their sinister melodies, layering serpentining guitars atop each other, spinning a web of desolate harmonies around the listener.
With ASHEN WOMB, Phrenelith give us the foretold sound of the apocalypse, but whether it’s a warning or a celebration is yet undecided. (KD)

PHRENELITH – Desolate Endscape LP (Repress)

Issuing forth like a deadly miasma from the tombs of subterranean Copenhagen, Phrenelith unleash their debut full-length like the hounds of Hades themselves. Coming off a spate of well-received demos in addition to a split with Spectral Voice on Deutschland’s Iron Bonehead Records plus their Chimaerian Offspring Cassette EP on Extremely Rotten Records, the sound is foetid, guttural and gasping. Like a half-decomposed corpse disinterred from the marshlands, this slithering rotten filth is hideously attractive, repulsively inviting in its gruesome fascination. A fine sense of poise and grandeur leads to unusual progressions and neck-snapping rhythmic variations. Atonal apocalyptic melodies collide with off-kilter riff work, crossing the lines between traditional filthy death metal found on the lost tapes of the ’80s alongside splendid maniacal hooks a mile wide which will stand the test of time. This is the Desolate Endscape – abandon hope and embark on the descent.
