Ripping in with a cacophony of putrid yet punctual instrumental ferocity and gnarly vocals, those who are new to this beastly underground entity will be greeted with not just aggression but absolutely masterful musicianship where every element is a carefully crafted weapon in the great arsenal. The bass guitar is otherworldly while the drums hammer with remorseless action. Meanwhile Hyperdontia’s riffing is absolutely savage and the vocals sublimely sepulchral. Riveting, ruthlessly visceral and with dynamics aplenty to keep things unpredictable, there is no way anyone couldn’t be gripped by this masterfully menacing music. This is not some throwaway foursome of songs that weren’t good enough for an album, this is a dense and tight punch that in under 20 minutes will render you destroyed by truly impeccable Death Metal extremity.

Unafraid of technicality, both in the riffing and lead work, along with the rhythm sections; there is no escaping just how monstrously skilled these guys are. That said, the brutality and barbarity is still there, this is not some flimsy polished gem of guitarists showing off. There is a soul and it devours all in the path, planting the most malicious sounds directly into your brain. One of the bands biggest strengths is incorporating plenty of shifts and new ideas rather than treading water, and to call this MLP exhilarating would be an understatement. The descent into madness is one that is a joy to experience, even if a tormenting one. Diabolizer do not intend to ease you in, preferring to throw everything they have at you, which is a forceful and crushing maelstrom of true Death Metal magnificence. Contorting riffs and malignant rhythmic battery ensue with a vengeful blend of ideas that are conveyed superbly by a titanic production, ensuring every element of brutality can be felt through the entire body. The demonic atmosphere of the record is impressive enough, but there is just the right amount of technicality to show how skilled these musicians are without straying far from pulverizing us with utter malice. The solos, for example, are played gloriously while remaining short in most cases so as not to interrupt the grave-splitting onslaught of pure old school morbidity. Enormous variety in the riffing, drums and vocals alike ensures all forty minutes of this record are impactful, intense and insanely well executed. Hailing from Toronto, COPROLITH formed in 2023 and promptly released their debut demo, which ME SACO UN OJO released on vinyl early the next year. While that demo was undeniably a promising start, the quintet dive deeply into an abyss that’s heavier, more doomed, and most definitely darker with their debut album, Putrescence.

Truly titled, Putrescence is a vast landscape of rot and dread. COPROLITH illustrate this landscape with a bounty of the very best sounds of the very early ’90s: DEATH METAL, tried and true, but stirring within their cauldron is the tank-like bludgeon of ​Grave, the monolith pulse of Demigod, and the sepulchral tendrils of ​Incantation. That the Canadians splice & sluice those ingredients to their diabolical design shows both a lifer’s understanding of these foundational sounds and, more so, a will to honor this tradition ​with fiercely focused personality – keenly knowing what’s ​between the slimy exoskeleton and its rotten underbelly, so to speak. And the fact that all but one of the ​album’s six tracks stretch well beyond the five-minute mark shows that there’s charred, ​challenging vistas being explored along the way…

Despite its title, Atavistic Unraveling shows ASTRIFEROUS at their tightest and sharpest, with chops and execution meeting at a nexus of impossibly horrific proportions. Duly armed, the quartet take their songwriting to strange, skronking lengths, rendering their angularity both an unsettling and utterly attacking thing. Likewise, the slight cleaning-up of production has paid dividends, allowing these malformed ruminations to fully seep into the listener’s psyche – mangling the mind, wracking the body – whilst emerging with just enough linear propulsion to land the record on the right side of art rather than riff salad.

Collectively, these changes have made ASTRIFEROUS even more world-eating than before, further cementing their homeland’s death metal scene as one of the most potent around. Atavistic Unraveling awaits those who dare…

Hailing from one of the most fertile scenes in recent years, Costa Rica’s CANDARIAN were spawned in 2020 when Christopher (guitar) and Jose Pablo (bass / vocals) decided to start a new project inspired by old-school death metal from the early ’90s, like Autopsy and Incantation, with lyrics revolving around themes of gore and horror. After some rehearsals, Pablo (drums) and Felipe (guitar) were recruited, and the lineup was then completed. During the following months, the band focused on finishing their debut demo and presenting it live throughout the local scene. That demo, Stagnant Livor Mortis, was released in late 2022 by ME SACO UN OJO on cassette and quickly established the name CANDARIAN as a considerable newcomer.

And with the imminent release of their debut album, CANDARIAN capitalize on that potential – with disgusting, punishing aplomb. Titled Trepanación – the grisly cover art courtesy of Grant Hatfield leaves no doubt what the English translation is – the Costa Ricans’ first full-length is the fullest manifestation of their authentically throwback DEATH METAL: malignant, odious, reckless, and groove-laden. No more but no less, this is the early ’90s done to perfection, from performance and production on down; everything congeals into a totality that’s all-consuming and utterly convincing. It’s not inaccurate to suggest that Trepanación could bring long-buried corpses bubbling to the surface in a quagmire of rottenness. However, this pulsing & putrescent soundscape of horror and doom manages to go above basic old-school worship whilst including all the necessary filth that vintage death metal needs. Whether it’s the sometimes-bestial aspect to their rhythmic surge (think Belial’s classic Wisdom of Darkness) to the never-belabored atmosphere of the haunting and hovering, CANDARIAN display a mature grasp beyond their young years,

Prepare to bang your head and drudge through the mulched layers of corpses that CANDARIAN leave in their wake. The time is nigh to become possessed by real terror and carnage…and get crushed by Trepanación!
