Despite my lifelong pursuit of record collecting, I only discovered this gem three years ago. I likely overlooked this record hundreds of times. The band’s name and the album cover always made me think, “What the hell is this shit, mate?”

However after making this massive error, I finally bought a copy from my friend Lee Dorrian and have since been playing the album on rotation.

This is the first ever vinyl repress of Jim Jones And The Kool-Ade Kids’ first album, it’s courtesy of Dark Descent and it will be available on Friday from 6pm GMT on mesacounojo.com

Please don’t make the same mistake I did, don’t sleep on this record. It’s great. Trust me.

Best Albums of 2019

These are my top 10 albums of 2019. I could have added a couple more releases here if I’m honest, but I’ve been trying to avoid the same records that everybody else has in their ‘best of the year’ lists.

Obviously I’ve not listed any of my own album releases below, to keep things fair. This is in no order of preference, however the first on my list – Deiquisitor – is actually the record I’ve been playing more than any other this year. If you haven’t listened to the record yet, you should move your ass and get a copy.

I’d also like to mention a bunch of demo tapes, as I think that in particular Extremely Rotten, Headsplit and Maggot Stomp have been doing a very good job this year. I’m going to just mention five which I think are, in my modest opinion, the best demos of this year. In no order of preference:

Through her lens, Ester has lifted the veil on extreme music’s most notorious players and in turn become one of the most prolific and significant metal music photographers.

Having captured images of the likes of GHOST, WATAIN, ELECTRIC WIZARD, CATHEDRAL, MAYHEM, KATATONIA, PARADISE LOST, AT THE GATES, CARCASS, DARKTHRONE, ROTTING CHRIST, VENOM, ABBATH, TRIPTYKON, SHINING, BEHEMOTH and others, Ester has been granted unprecedented access to many of the bands she has worked with, allowing her a unique insight that is evident in the images she creates. Those photographs are now preserved in a book that is as much a historical document of a specific period in extreme music, as it is a piece of art in itself.

Ars Umbra is as essential a part of a music collection as the albums it sits alongside. Containing over 150 photographs, spanning over 100 bands – with accompanying texts written by the featured musicians, detailing the stories behind many of the pictures – Ars Umbra beautifully captures the energy of an important part of heavy metal history.
